Human and Experimental Factors in Protracted Isolation Studies
Abstract
During the past two years, in a series of studies into the effects of abnormal atmospheres on man, volunteer Naval subjects have been physically isolated from the outside world, in a large exposure chamber, continuously for periods of up to 81 days. The planning and execution of these studies revealed questions, the answers to which could neither he deduced from available experience nor logically forecast. Some of I he human and experimental problems involved are examined, and the ways in which they were tackled are discussed together with an asessment of the main lessons learnt during these relatively unique studies.
